Las Fritas - Impressive Quality and Wallet Friendly

Who doesn't love fries? I am a big fan but finding good quality ones is not an easy task. I had the opportunity to meet Borja, the owner of Las Fritas on Joan de Borbó in Barceloneta and since a few months also on Carrer de l'Argenteria in the Born. What a guy! He takes fries very seriously, and it was so interesting to hear what he had to say.

Borja wanted to make fries the Spanish way, not copying the famous fries in Belgium or the Netherlands. He went on the lookout for the perfect kind of potatoes and created a very specific way to prepare the potatoes before the go in the fryer (a very secret way too!). He wants Las Fritas to be all about quality ingredients, and puts a tremendous amount of effort into every detail. All of the sauces for the toppings are made in-house, except for a couple of brand-specific sauces like the famous Salsa Espinaler.

In Las Fritas you can get your fries with plenty of different toppings, in addition to the sauces there is for example a fantastic botifarra that is made by a local guy who comes in ones a week with his artisan sausages. You can really taste the difference, the botifarra is chunky and SO flavourful.  One of the toppings, the chili con carne, is made with Sant Pau beans (local deluxe beans) and dry-aged beef from Girona. WOW.

I fell head over heels in love with the satay sauce (an almost sweet) peanut sauce that goes amazingly well with the fries..! The cheese topping is fantastic too for cheese lovers, a wonderful mix of cheddar and emmental. The fries themselves are PERFECTION. They are creamy inside and have a really good crispy outside.

There is a lot more than fries at Las Fritas though. Try their excellent croquetas (the truffle mushroom ones are my favourite!), their olives, the pimientos de padrón... Again, everything is made in-house, and they work with the recipes until they get it just right. It's a good place to go for a vermouth too, they have wonderful artisanal vermouth carefully chosen to find just the right one. A small detail to highlight the attention to quality is that the wine is served in Riedel glasses..! They have a couple of taps where they pour Madrid-style foamy glasses of beer, and they also have craft beer available.

Even though the locations might have you thinking otherwise, the owner wants to highlight that he does not specifically cater for tourists, he wants everybody to come in and feel right at home. In fact the decoration at Argenteria feels like a homey local neighbourhood bar, and the lovely staff adds to the charm.

I was very impressed with Las Fritas, I had no idea of how dedicated these guys are to quality. And above all: the quality-price ratio is really on point, you most certainly won't break the bank here.
