Little Fern Café - Can We Move in With You?
I had been following Little Fern Cafe’s Instagram from the first day they posted, long before opening day, and I had a feeling it would be something good. When they opened I went there as soon as I could, with VERY high expectations. And let me tell you: they were all more than exceeded.
Little Fern Café sits in a corner (doesn’t that sound like the beginning of a fairy tale..?) of a not too busy street in Poble Nou. My favourite places are always in a corner. The big windows let in a lot of light into a beautifully decorated space that is bright and modern, with a few touches of green here and there.
The menu. WOW. Things I have never seen in Barcelona before, and things I always go for when I’m abroad and I’m looking for a good brunch. There are A LOT of different (tasty looking) items, and it’s so hard to choose. I want to live next door and come down every morning and work my way through the list. The owners are so lovely: Jay from New Zealand and Judit from Hungary, and they tell me they have received inspiration for the menu from their travels and from Jay's home country.
If you’re vegan, vegetarian or have dietary restrictions they’ve got you covered. I am a big fan of healthy breakfasts and brunches, and there were a lot of suitable options. I went for a granola bowl with the house granola (it’s like no granola I’ve had before, so fresh, crispy and perfect), hibiscus ripple vegan coconut yoghurt, rhubarb compote (yessss! rhubarb!!!) and coconut flakes. The bowl was elaborated, big and filling, I loved it.
If granola isn’t your thing then check out typical Kiwi dishes like Corn Fritters, or fun things like Kimchi Pancakes, the Breakfast Roll, a Buttermilk Chicken Burger, the Bircher Bowl with almond soaked apple and cinnamon oats, poached pear and crumble. Just to name a few.
I paired my bowl up with a charcoal latte; the drinks menu is interesting for both coffee lovers (specialty coffee from Nømad) and for us who prefer other drinks. There are cold-pressed juices and smoothies, hot chocolate, breakfast cocktails (! and also a non-alcoholic one that looks great!), good quality teas, wellness lattes like my charcoal one, and the excellent Prana chai (made in Melbourne Australia, the quality is fantastic) that goes so well with oat milk. And the cup it's served in is so pretty..!
Little Fern is perfection, and I would do anything to have a place like this in my neighbourhood. I might even considering moving just to be close to them..!
