Luluwaaau - Unexpected and Unforgettable

I received a message on Instagram not long ago from a reader saying that I have to visit Luluwaaau, a recently opened restaurant in Gracia. Her boyfriend is half Chinese, and according to him this is the best Chinese food he has had in Barcelona. Now that is intriguing.

I had passed by this place many times and seen it change from a bar to another bar, but eventually I started seeing a menu outside with interesting dishes. This, together with the message above, made me go and try Luluwaaau as soon as I could.

The very unpretentious, humble place is run by Bin Zhang and his wife. Zhang used to be a chef in his home country China, Shanghai to be more precise, and continued his career when he arrived in Barcelona some years ago. He was working for a long time for Nandu Jubany, but he always had a dream of opening his own place. Now he has, a humble little place close to Mercat de la Llibertat, a location that is a bit complicated when it comes to drawing hungry patrons, but that definitely seems to be changing.

Because Luluwaaau is really worth a visit. The menu changes daily with highlights from around Asia, but where chef Zhang really shines is when he goes back to his Chinese roots and prepares dumplings, small fried ribs, wonton soup... We found out he is an expert of hand-pulled noodles, and did we take advantage of that..!

The hand-pulled noodles are not on the menu, but you can order them beforehand (a day ahead is sufficient) and so we did. We gathered a group of people who were fans of Chinese food, and feasted on the wonderfully perfect noodles. We even got a peek into the kitchen when Zhang was preparing them. It's a true work of art!

Luluwaaau is stellar, and really worth a visit. My mouth waters every time I think of those noodles, so make sure you try them!
