Picnic Restaurant - Packed with Atmosphere!
Picnic Restaurant has since a long time been one of my favorites. I have two main reasons: atmosphere and food. When it comes to atmosphere the place is very different at brunch time and in the evening, and you really have to check out both.
So let’s start off with brunch. It is TO DIE FOR. The place gets very busy so book beforehand. If not be prepared to wait for a little while. It’s actually one of the few places in the city where you see a queue outside! Although a queue might be annoying it usually is a good sign, there’s something worth waiting for.
The restaurant is small, but the chairs and stools are strategically placed so there is plenty of seating. The place is lively and busy, as it should be at brunch. The staff manages to always stay friendly even though they’re have a lot to do.
This is a perfect place to go for a vodka- or ruminfused brunch, the atmosphere calls for it. In winter I love a hot apple-cinnamon-rum concoction, and in summer the pink vodka lemonade does the trick.
So what’s on the menu? Maybe some fried green tomatoes, very hard to find in Barcelona. The tacos are delicious, and the huge bagel is quite memorable too. But don’t forget about the sweets. You can either choose among the tasty cakes (the cheesecake is among the best in the city!), a huge stack of pancakes or… drumroll… probably the best French toast I’ve had. Ever. Please note that the French Toast in the picture below is only HALF a portion because I had eaten so much but I really wanted some FT too... So I asked for half a portion instead. It was unforgettable.
But brunch isn’t all Picnic is about. Don’t forget about dinner! The atmosphere is completely different. It’s much calmer, and perfect for a dinner for two. The menu is obviously different too, and won’t disappoint. I like the antipasto (you can choose between two sizes), the hanger steak and the oxbeef burger. And check out the grilled kangaroo! For hard core carnivores there’s also steak tartar, sometimes it can be tough to find a good one here in Barcelona. And don't forget about the cocktails!
