Restaurant Pop-Up in a Cargo Container - Yes Please!
Recently we had the pleasure to attend the opening of a completely new concept in the La Maquinista shopping center: the Miss Saigon - Esencial by Isma Alonso pop up. On the top floor of the shopping center, nestled between fast food chains, you can find this gem of a restaurant, where the kitchen is run by chef Ismael Alonso (Executive Chef at Mandarin Oriental).
It's not any old restaurant: the pop up is a cargo container and is so adorable, inside it is beautifully clad with green leafy wallpaper, and they even have a cute little terrace upstairs. Even though the menu is in the hands of a top chef the prices are VERY reasonable.
The flavours are inspired from around the world but with some local touches. A fresh Thai salad with crab, a Tom Yum soup, many different types of sandwiches (they have Bahn Mi!) and a dessert menu that’s short but straight to the point. I particularly enjoyed the tacos made with pork cheek, avocado, onion and a spicy mayonnaise.
The dessert was the perfect finale for a lovely evening. It consisted of a juicy pineapple sliced in its skin, covered with lime zest that gave it a wonderful freshness, and with a splash of molasses. This is what great chefs do best: take simple things to a whole new level.
The pop up will be in La Maquinista only until the end of June (every day from 13.00h to 23.00h), so make sure you go there for a visit! The project behind the pop up, Urbox, focuses on having restaurant pop ups in unexpected places, and you will be seeing a lot more of them around Spain!
