Hawker 45 - Exotic Street Food Done Right
I had my eyes on Hawker 45 from the minute it opened. It seemed like something different, something very interesting and authentic. And when I'm talking about authentic I refer to when the chef and her team does something from the heart and transmits it to the customers. That is exactly what happens at Hawker 45.
The menu brings street food inspiration from Latin America (Brasil, Peru) and Asia (Singapore, Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam...) and I find it very intriguing when there are plenty of ingredients named next to each dish, and many that I am not familiar with. The stranger the better is my motto, so I usually go for the things with the most ingredients I am not familiar with..! It is so hard to choose from the menu, because there are so many dishes I want to try. If you go during lunch time it's easier: they have a menu del día that's good value for money. You can still choose from the full menu though if you prefer.
I warmly recommend the tasting menu. It's amazing! We paired it with cocktails, and I was blown away. I get drunk just by looking at alcohol, so I asked for a pairing with less alcohol, and it was still perfection. Each drink accompanied wonderfully the flavours in the different dishes. The cocktail menu is created by mixologist and genius Javier Caballero. You can choose a pairing with craft beer instead if that's your thing!
A huge thumbs up for the fact that you get FREE water brought to you to the table, and it's purified through reverse osmosis. In a city where you rarely receive free water to the table this is something much appreciated. Oh, and make sure you try the home-made sodas and kombuchas, they are very good!
But let's go back to the food. I love the laksa made with rice: wonderfully thick and tasty with exotic, rich but mild flavours that marry together perfectly. I also thoroughly enjoyed a lamb satay that is served in a banana leaf together with rice. It's honestly very difficult to find a favourite, because there are so many fascinating flavours. The Philippine ceviche is mind-blowing, and the "bombas" with Pho are excellent. Oh and please don't miss the desserts, check this one out:
I love the flavours, the drinks and the atmosphere at Hawker 45, and I am sure you will too. Try it!
