Welcome to Barcelona Food Experience!

I'm Maria. I'm from Finland, and I moved from that freaking cold and dark country to Barcelona ten years ago. I fell in love with the city, I fell in love with the food, and I fell in love with a Catalan man (who is now my husband). There is no turning back..!

So I love to eat. When I'm not eating I think about what I'll be eating next. Or which restaurant to visit in the weekend (or maybe a Monday. Or a Thursday...). I haven't been to all restaurants in the city, not even close, not even half of them. But I'm working my way through them as fast as I can..! I'm that annoying person who doesn't let anybody eat before I've taken a picture. I'm also that annoying person who stands up at a restaurant to get that perfect angle of all the dishes on the table. So sorry about that. But somebody's gotta do it!

Here in Barcelona Food Experience, my little corner of the universe, I'm gathering all the places I love. If there's some place you think is missing please let me know, because maybe I haven't been there yet. The reviews here are completely subjective but I try to avoid negative comments about restaurants, so if I didn't like it I haven't included it here. It's by no means a complete list of restaurants, just a place where I gather my favorites.

Here you can find my favorite restaurants for brunching, for drinking, for splurging, for eating where the locals eat, you name it. I also have a section of my favorite restaurants in different neighborhoods (check the Neighbourhoods category). And obviously I have a blog! There I'm writing down all kinds of food related stories. Oh, and there's a travel section too! If you like what you see here about Barcelona then you might like the places I've visited in New York, Berlin, San Francisco or elsewhere.

So what is a good restaurant in my humble opinion? It's a place where I get friendly service and tasty food that's not too expensive. And it needs to have that little something. Maybe it's the atmosphere. Maybe it's the obvious love that the chef puts in each dish that goes out from the kitchen. Maybe it's the great conversation I can have with my dinner companion. Sometimes it's authenticity that does it for me. Sometimes it's all the healthy options on the menu.

If you have questions, suggestions or just want to send me a love letter then please do so!

Barcelona Food Experience

What is your favorite food?

Anything with foie gras. Grilled cheese sandwiches! Cheesecake. Actually cheese in general. My mother’s cabbage stew. Hot-smoked fish. Ribs. I have a soft spot for healthy, gluten-free, sugar-free foods. Matcha latte. Clams. Spanish red wine. Brunch!

Do you write negative reviews?

Nope. If I go to a place that I don’t like I don’t write about it.

What restaurants can’t I miss in Barcelona?

Check out my Best Of-category! There you can find my all-time favorites.

What are the best restaurants for seafood?

Have a look at my Best Of:s! There are my favorite seafood places.

What is your favorite foodie city?

Except for Barcelona I adore Portland, Oregon. And Lyon is great too. Granada and its tapas is fantastic, and San Sebastian and Santiago de Compostela are great foodie cities in the north of Spain.

What is Barcelona missing food wise?

Barcelona has so many great things, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a place that would serve grilled cheese sandwiches. And places where there's bone marrow on the menu!

How can I reach you?

E-mail me! maria@barcelonafoodexperience.com

What is your favorite restaurant?

Depends on what I’m feeling like having, I don’t have one single favorite. But at the moment I really like La Estrella. And Mont Bar. And Racó d'en Cesc... And I have many, many favourite cafés!

Why isn’t this or that restaurant included?

For one of two reasons: a) I haven’t been to it yet or b) I really didn’t like it.

Do you have an Instagram?

I most certainly do! @barcelonafoodexperience
