Bar Central - a Secret Raval Oasis

Some time ago Marcos from Satan’s Coffee, Stefano Colombo (one of the Colombo twins from Xemei) and an ex-colleague of his, Ana Bleier, put their heads together and decided to take over a space that has been closed off for many years. This collaboration has resulted in Bar Central, a beautiful oasis in the Raval that feels somewhat of a secret.

The cafe holds a beautiful garden (Jardines de la Casa de la Misericordia) that is the real showstopper. There is also the main building with a few tables and a bar where you’ll place your order. In the summer, the space inside offers a lovely refuge when the heat gets to you.

The space is packed with greenery: the outside showcases palm trees, ferns, moss, and potted plants, and there is even a little waterfall amidst it all. The building is, surprisingly enough, owned by the church, and it gives it that added serenity over the place. Some things could be said about Satan teaming up with the church here but let’s just leave it for now, shall we..?

The outdoor space is bustling, but in the main building you’ll most likely find space if you prefer to get some shade. Indulge in some tasty ice cream from Natas, or maybe a cooling glass of kombucha. The friendly waiter showed me how the kombucha bottle holds a cartoon strip, the first page of a collectible series. How cool is that? They also serve very tasty looking sandwiches and some snacks.

If you venture further to the back of the main building, there is a lovely patio filled with potted plants, that also are for sale if you get a sudden urge to bring home some of that greenery. A wonderful idea. You will find this inviting refuge by going through the La Central bookshop, or by walking into the alley opposite Dos Palillos. But don’t tell anyone about this place, ok?
