Bubo Tapas Bar - Quite The Surprise!
Most of us living in Barcelona have devoured the amazing pastries of Bubó pastry shop. One could even claim they are little pieces of art..! But did you know that Bubó also has a tapas bar, next door to the pastry shop in the Born neighborhood?
Bubó Tapas Bar might be small, but it is absolutely packed with atmosphere, and has gorgeous views of the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral. They are open every day, from the morning until late at night, for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and afternoon snack and dinner. The menu has recently had a major update from the hands of chef Anna O’Flynn, who has a marvelous reputation in the city. She also did a 3-month stage in famed two Michelin star restaurant Fäviken, just to name an example. Pretty impressive, don’t you think? At Bubó Tapas Bar she takes locally produced high quality ingredients that are stars in their own right, and creates beautiful dishes packed with flavor.
Breakfast here is a casual affair with filled sandwiches, toasts, yoghurt with granola, chia pudding and the gorgeous poached eggs with add-ons. There is a brunch special available with roast beef, rocket, tomato and mayonnaise, exactly the kind that will fill you up when you’re hungry.
There is a lunch special available with a first and second course (choose from different options), and an optional dessert. The tapas menu caught my attention with its interesting dishes, made with local, quality ingredients. The Sweet Potato Bravas here are famed, if you want to try a fun twist on the local classic. We loved the croquetas too, made with roasted chicken, and brie with rhubarb (!). I am a big fan of octopus, and their interpretation with mojo picón did not disappoint at all! We also went for the Vitello Tonnato, also a big favorite of mine and it came with a wonderfully tasty cream with tuna, mustard and capers.
If steak tartar is your thing, you won’t be disappointed here, quite the contrary. The amazing, quality meat comes served with quail egg and horseradish (yum!) and more. Make sure to also try the Huevos Rotos: a classic that has its own little twist here.
The flambeed foie gras is magnificent, and the scallops are simply mind-blowing. The mackerel smoked by Rooftop Smokehouse is also one of a kind. The new menu includes interesting vegetarian options, such as spelt salad that was fresh and delicious.
If you love cheese as much as I do don’t miss the cheese board, all made with local cheeses (check the map in the menu for the origin). Also the wine list has a local focus, which is much appreciated. They put a lot of focus on pairings here, you’ll be delighted with the options.
I dare you not to have dessert. How can you miss out on the delicious pastries? Check the display for the options of the day, and if you feel daring check with the staff to ask for a cocktail to pair it with, the Bar Manager Miguel Angel Palau will make exactly what you’re looking for.
Bubó Tapas Bar has gone straight to our list of favorite tapas bars in Barcelona. The service here is top notch: so wonderfully friendly and attentive at all times.
