El Tarantín - Approachable Caribbean
El Tarantín is exactly the kind of place I am always on the lookout for. Something interesting, different, not too expensive and easy to approach. The focus in El Tarantín food is Caribbean food, and all kinds of it: from every little island imaginable. The lovely couple behind the restaurant delves into exotic recipes and sometimes twists them a little just for fun.
I went for lunch and their menu is really on point: excellent value for money but still with an interesting variety of options. We had the opportunity to try some items from the standard menu too, and loved it all. The first snack was already a great taste of what was to come: so called Mariquitas which stands for fried plantain with a black bean dip. It was heavenly! After this we had Bacalaitos which are little fried bites of cod serve with pineapple chutney. The next dish consisted of crunchy spheres of yuca and jerk chicken and mojo verde. Delicious. The shrimp cocktail was also very good, with a hint of tabasco and tamarillo ketchup. The duck breast was served in a banana leaf which was absolutely beautiful.
The dessert was the dreamiest ever and consisted of two of my favourite things: lychee pannacotta..! It came with a coulis made with roselle (flor de Jamaica) and roses and it was simply heaven..!
The restaurant is located close to Francesc Macia, so if you are working close by then make sure you go for their lunch menu. But the place is perfect for evenings too: it has a lot of atmosphere and especially the cosy tables in the back. And the cocktails look REALLY good..!
