A New Superstar is Born - Enkel
Deep in the heart of the Gotico, on one of the quieter streets, you can find a true jewel that is Enkel. It's not easy to get away from the crowds in the Gotico, but Enkel provides exactly the refuge that is well needed. The kitchen is open all day which is much appreciated, and the brunch is available every day (except for Mondays when they are closed).
Enkel is the new superstar, not only in the neighbourhood but also in the city. It opened without making much noise, and we love how it quietly has won the hearts of its visitors. All the details are well considered and make up a perfect package. The decoration of the place is cool and hip, the owners are architects and you can see the professional touch. Craft beer is in focus here, and the offer is well curated with local breweries and international gems.
And the food. THE FOOD. First we had dinner, and I loved the options: Mediterranean with Latin American influences. Ingredients I had never heard of were on the menu and I love the excitement of seeing familiar dishes that have been upgraded to something fun and interesting. A good example is the bombas: served with "chicharron de pancetta y criollita, mayo de ají". Delicious and exciting. We were recommended the tongue, which I have to admit I have never eaten and I was slightly scared about it. I tried it and it was AMAZING. It had been slow-cooked during 14 hours and it came with a sauce where the umami was taken to a mind-blowing level. Everything we had was so good, another favourite was the grilled octopus that came with a smoked leche de tigre sauce. The veggie burger also looks wonderful, with portobello mushroom and horseradish sauce, and the filled-to-the-brim arepas.
But that was only dinner. I had a brief look at the (long) brunch menu and decided I had to go back as soon as possible. These guys know brunch (they also own brunch experts Oma Bistro) and obviously they nail the brunch at Enkel too. You will not be disappointed, quite the contrary: there are both healthy and indulgent options, something for meatlovers, vegetarians and vegans, coffee lovers (specialty coffee), pancakes... EVERYTHING! You will find items you rarely find anywhere else: Shakshuka, Chicken Muffin, halloumi as an extra, and both matcha latte and something called Beetrootchino that I can't wait to try.
I had the French Toast and it was to die for. The bread was perfect and sweet, and it came with a mató cream (a sweet cream cheese), fresh fruit and molasses. A dream breakfast, I tell you. The matcha latte came in a big cup just as I like it, and the açai bowl was filled to the brim.
Enkel is simply amazing, and I love how it so discreetly and quietly has taken its place as a star in the gastronomic scene in Barcelona. It's easy to approach, it's laid back, has great staff and it is so inviting. I have so much love for the place!
