Fat Barbies - Lodge-Cabin Chic BBQ
I knew Fat Barbies would be good already before it opened. I found them on Instagram and I began to follow them, and I could not wait until they would open their doors. Due to a busy schedule I had to restrain myself a few weeks after opening day to finally visit, but it was worth the wait.
The space is stunning. It could easily be located in Shoreditch, London, a cool neighborhood in Copenhagen or why not even in Tokyo. Bare grey walls, wooden furniture, a few pieces with an industrial touch… I could live there, really. I want it to be my apartment. It consists of two floors, where the top floor hosts larger tables for groups and the large kitchen where all the magic happens.
Let’s spend a bit of time on the kitchen. It’s not any old kitchen you see. Here they use wood (olive wood mainly) and smoke to prepare their dishes. The meat is organic, and everything is made from scratch, including the pickles, the barbecue sauces and even the marshmallows. How can you not love it?
I get a cozy lodge-cabin feeling of the concept here when it comes to the food, and also certain details in the decoration. The water is served in green enamel mugs (adorable!), there is chopped wood here and there, and there are s’mores on the menu for dessert..!
On our first visit we had a Menu del Día that includes a sandwich (we had a pulled pork one with soft brioche bread), a drink and a dessert or coffee, and we also decided to try a few things off the lunch menu. I went for the carrots with mole and seeds and I absolutely loved them, and beef ribs. They were wonderfully tender, perfectly seasoned and paired wonderfully with the barbecue sauce. If you are into spice you get your money’s worth here! But don’t worry if that’s not your thing, there are milder versions available too.
Other items that caught my eye among the first courses were the baked potato with creme fraiche and sobrasada (!), the Mac & Swiss and most definitely the provoleta. Among the seconds you’ll also find chicken wings and pork ribs St Luis style, in addition to the pulled pork sandwich and the beef ribs, and they also have specials such as brisket. For dessert there is apple pie, cheesecake made with mató and of course the mighty S’more.
No need to go to Austin, Texas anymore for a good BBQ, we’ve got it right here in Barcelona. These guys know what they’re doing! I love a concept that is so well thought through, and where EVERYTHING comes together. Cool place, great food, friendly staff. Everything is made with so much love and care.
