Marea Alta - Unbeatable Views and Sophisticated Seafood

Marea Alta is that perfect place when you are looking for something unique. This restaurant has 360-degree views of the city, they are truly unbeatable. It is located by the sea, in a tall building that rises 24 floors, just next to Las Ramblas.

The decoration here is attractive: it is equally casual with its boat furniture inspired tables and chairs, and sophisticated with details such as the marble-like menu and the beautiful tableware.

Seafood is in focus on the menu at Marea Alta. You will find raw dishes, seafood stews made with local recipes, but also innovative and exciting items such as the grilled oysters that we devoured. Grilling and smoking are the main techniques used here, and they certainly use them well.

A seafood restaurant in Barcelona wouldn’t be anything if it didn’t have a few options of tinned goods, too. At Marea Alta, they pimp them slightly, such as the tinned razor clams that come with lime and butter.

You will find shellfish that you might not even have heard of before, which is truly fascinating and make sure to listen carefully to the daily specials, with options that might not be easy to come across.

When it comes to fish, most options are to share between two people (or more), such as the monkfish that comes grilled and perfect for sharing. It comes with a tender sauce that keeps the fish juicy, as grilling it can make it dry. We loved it.

It is worth saving room for the desserts, I particularly loved the pavlova that came with beets (!), white chocolate and grapefruit. A wonderfully sophisticated dessert. If you want to continue to devour the views you can do so in the downstairs bar, Marea Baja, that has several terraces where you can sit outside and feel the sea breeze.

It goes without saying that Marea Alta is not cheap: it will set you back about 80-100€ per person if you share a bottle of wine, but it is perfect for a special occasion. It is a wonderful treat.
