Olofson - Smoking Hot
New Olofson is a no frills kind of place. Come in, grab a piece of paper with the menu options, note down your order and wait until they serve you the food on a metal tray. Sounds simple, right? But Olofson is so much more than that.
The space is surprisingly large, and has that garage feel to it with concrete walls, cool mismatched furniture, a few sofas here and there and tables that spill on to the sidewalk. Have a look in the back and you see a massive (by Barcelona standards) kitchen, and that is where the literal magic happens.
Olofson is all about smoke. I have been craving a place like this, a restaurant that specialises in taking lots of yummy things and see what happens when you smoke them (food, in the kitchen, don’t get any ideas people). Sophistication but at the same time the kind of casual that you just grab that smoked rib in your hands and eat it.
The smoked elements here are also surprising. In the list of starters you have, to mention an example, corn on the cob, but it’s not smoked, the butter they serve with it is..! Major bonus points. Large mushrooms filled with smokey mozzarella. Salads, to balance the meat and the fish. Pastrami sandwiches! Oh, and did I mention craft beer straight from the tap?
I was very pleasantly surprised to see hot-smoked salmon, which is very difficult to come across in Barcelona (cold-smoked salmon you can get everywhere). It comes with an authentic potato salad, tartar sauce (with dill!) and pickles. I love the pickles, they aren’t too vinegary but just right. The ribs come with a rich barbecue sauce and the meat falls off the bones. Yum.
I have to mention the dessert: a brownie where the surprising element was the smoked cream. Again: loved it.
Olofson brings a northern European coolness to the Barcelona, and it fits right in. Now they have opened a second location in the Raval, just as big as the one in Eixample!
