BaLó - Where Barcelona and London Meet

There’s a new kid in town! BaLó has landed in Les Corts, with a lovely concept. The name is short for Barcelona and London, and stands for the home cities of the owners and chefs Lena Maria Grané (Barcelona) and Ricky Smith (London).

Already from the entrance you can see that this place is special. The restaurant is beautiful and minimalist, with a wall at the door with wines, and the in the back a dining room that includes a nice, private space. This is a restaurant where just by the look of it you know you’ll have a great experience.

The menu has several different options, depending what you’re in for. There is a menu del día with three courses, or you can opt for dishes a la carte. There is also a tasting menu with many, many courses, where the chefs showcase all of the best they have to offer.

We opted for a menu del día, and loved it. We started off with home-made sourdough bread, and lots of butter: a perfect way to start a meal in my book. We ordered a nice Gin Fizz as an aperitif, the drinks list (including the wines) is a joy.

As a first course we had potato and leek soup with blue cheese, and a delicious mackerel with pickled apple and dill. Beautiful flavors, some of them that I have dearly missed here in Barcelona.

The second courses we opted for were a very tender entrecôte with celeriac purée, kale (I need the recipe for that kale!) and Jerusalem artichoke, and a sea bream that came served with a dill oil. For the meat we got special knives with handles made of olive wood, such a lovely detail.

For dessert we opted for a beautiful merengue, mascarpone and berry concoction, and a lovely nudge to local traditions: chocolate with bread and olive oil. I absolutely love this dessert, and here it was taken to the next level. So creamy, and served with the loveliest, grassiest olive oil. Such a lovely meal.

The staff at BaLó deserves a special mention: they are very skilled, friendly, and professional, and make the experience a delight. BaLó is perfect for a business lunch, for a lovely meal with your partner, or a celebration or anniversary. I can’t wait to go back and try more!
