Casa Amalia - Market Fresh, Now Also with Views

There’s something truly special in the Time Out Market here in Barcelona, and that is the wonderfully authentic and unique Casa Amàlia. In case you’ve visited their original location in Eixample, next to the Concepció market, you know how great this restaurant is. With the opening of the market, they have created their own space on the top floor, offering the same authentic, fresh local dishes as they are known for.

Casa Amàlia in the only restaurant with a full a la carte-menu in the Time Out Market, and they have managed to create a charming spot with stunning views of the port included. Snag a spot outside on the terrace if you can; it’s worth it.

It feels like somewhat of a secret, and once you come inside its doors you leave all the hustle and bustle of the city outside. Their kitchen (you can sneak a little peek inside if you wish through the window) only works with local and seasonal ingredients to create traditional Catalan market dishes, with a few fun, modern brushstrokes. The team here is very friendly and you get well taken care of.

On our visit, we started off our meal with a bite called the Thorpedo: a soft bun filled with tender acorn-fed Iberian pork rib, topped with anticucho sauce, peanuts, cilantro, and red onion. From there we continued on to the artichoke: don’t sleep on this tasty dish when in season, it comes covered in the most delicious foie sauce.

When you know the croquetas will be good, you ned to order them. They did not disappoint - ours were filled with spider crab and they are truly addictive. We also wanted something else traditional: Casa Amàlia’s torrezno with a crispy-meets-tender texture, made from Duroc pork cured in the traditional DO Soria style. I am picky with torreznos, but these are the melt-in-your mouth kind of bites. The soft, warm bread with tomato and olive oil is also a experience in itself.

One of Casa Amàlias strong suits is their rice dishes. We are talking paellas prepared with high-quality rice, with seafood, meat, or fish. They also do individual paellas - great news if your dining partner prefers something else, or if you are dining alone.

We couldn’t resist the desserts. I am a big fan of a good flan, and theirs did not disappoint. When deep-diving into the menu you can see the ingredients and their origins, even among the desserts with bread sourced from one of the best bakeries in the city, curd cheese from a little village in Catalunya… You get the drift.

Casa Amàlia is always a safe bet, be it for a night out with your partner, a lunch with the in-laws, or when you have guests over from out of town. Their Time Out Market location also offers the added bonus of the stunning views.
