Funky Bakers - The Funkiest Bakery in Town

When Funky Bakers landed in Barcelona they have changed the whole bakery scene in a the blink of an eye. It was unlike any bakery we had here so far: they have so many fun things you can’t find anywhere else. A mix of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Nordic and Australian, what more can you ask for?

I don’t really know where to start, I want you to see it with your own eyes. They open early (at 8AM) which is much appreciated, especially if you’re on your way to work and want to pick up something for breakfast or lunch, or if you’re visiting Barcelona and want something bright and early when you’re out sightseeing. Their location is great: smack bang on Passeig del Born. There is no seating inside (the space is packed with goodies!) but there are benches outside, and the beach is just a hop and a skip away if you'd like to have a breakfast with a view.

A lot of effort is put into the making of: the ingredients are local and organic. Everything is made from scratch and the result is very impressive. The counter is packed with so many appetising things. The smørrebrød-style sandwiches really caught my eye: where else do you get smørrebrød in Barcelona? Nowhere! At the time of writing they have three different ones: one with salmon and capers and wasabi mayonnaise, one with avocado and egg (vegetarian) and one with butternut squash with tahini and pomegranate seeds (vegan). The toppings vary depending on the season. There are sausage and egg rolls and other breakfast rolls and meat pies if you are looking for savory items, and different salads packed with tasty ingredients.

And let’s talk about the sweet stuff. Good luck with choosing I say, I would have had one of each if I could! The frangipane tart with rose jam catches anyone’s attention, and the carrot cake that has a lovely Funky Bakers twist to it. I loved the chia pudding that comes with a wonderful apple-cinnamon compote, decorated with pistachios.

I really recommend you check out the takeaway boxes: create a box with sweet and/or savory items and a drink, and take it with you to the park, the beach or even home with you for a cosy breakfast in bed. They even have cute little bottles of cava, doesn’t that make for a perfect plan..?

Funky Bakers has now opened a Deli and an Eatery in Eixample, both very much worth visiting! Read my review of The Deli here, and the Eatery here.
