La Carioca - Tropical Paradise
La Carioca has been a charmer right from the start, when it opened in a tiny place in the Barceloneta. Not very long ago it moved into a much larger space, but it still has that wonderful charm about it. Now it has a big terrace outside, and plenty of events with live music on weekends.
Recently they updated their menu, and it’s packed with all the good stuff. La Carioca is Brazilian and you see all the authentic Brazilian items represented on the menu. I had to try their açaí bowl and it was divine, one of the best I’ve ever had, packed with fruit, granola and a huge dollop of peanut butter (you can choose it as an extra, together with lots of other toppings).
The tapiocas are of course still on the menu, both savory and sweet. The tapiocas are a typical Brazilian snack, pockets made with tapioca, and filled with all sorts of yumminess. I particularly liked the vegan one with mushrooms, avocado and arugula. Tapioca is naturally gluten free, so it’s a great option if you want to indulge. The menu overall has good vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options.
For lunch you’ll find a few Brazilian dishes like picanha in addition to the usual menu, and on weekends they serve brunch, including amazing fluffy pancakes. The drink list is really impressive, with smoothies and juices, and lots of fun drinks, most of them Brazilian inspired. I loved their passionfruit mojito. If you are a fan of cachaça they have a tasting flight for you to try.
La Carioca is great to go with a group of friends and to have some fun, and don’t miss the brunch on weekends!
