Picnic Restaurant - Packed with Atmosphere
Picnic Restaurant rocked the brunch scene in Barcelona long before we could spell mimosas. It has always been among the first ones to introduce new concepts, way ahead of its time. They manage to be both cool and charming at the same time, and that, my friends, ain’t an easy thing to do.
There’s no way around it; I adore Picnic Restaurant. The place is packed with atmosphere, and it feels like you’re sitting in someone’s cozy kitchen. It’s not a big space, but the chairs and stools are strategically placed, so there is plenty of seating. There are a few tables outside too, should you prefer that. Especially on the weekends it gets jam-packed, so make sure to book beforehand, or you might have to wait for a little while. The lovely staff manages to always stay friendly even though they’re busy.
The food here is on point. The brunch has all the items you crave for and more, with a slight nudge to Southern comfort food. It is THE place to go for a vodka- (or rum) infused brunch; their spiked lemonades are to die for (with or without alcohol). There are lots of refreshing flavors to choose from; I particularly love the passion fruit lemonade.
So what’s on the menu? Everything you might need. Craving for the most delicious pancakes? Check. Huge Eggs Benedict? Check. Yummy breakfast tacos? Check. And in addition to being picture-perfect, everything is so delicious. Whatever you order, make sure to get the quinoa hash browns as a side: they’re so delicious, as are the fried green tomatoes (and very difficult to find in Barcelona!).
My particular favorite on the menu is the French Toast. It is DIVINE. It might just be the best French Toast I’ve ever had. EVER. So make sure to spare some room for it! If French Toast isn’t your thing, then go for a piece of the home-made cakes, or perhaps a seasonal dessert. On my last visit, I had a nectarine crumble that was spectacular: such a comforting dessert.
But brunch isn’t all Picnic is about. Dinner here is great too! The atmosphere is entirely different. It’s much calmer, and perfect for a dinner for two. The menu is also different, and won’t disappoint. I like the antipasto (you can choose between two sizes), the hanger steak and the ox-beef burger that comes with truffle fries. And check out the grilled kangaroo! For hardcore carnivores there’s also steak tartar, sometimes it can be tough to find a good one here in Barcelona. And don't forget the cocktails!
They have also recently opened a cute deli across the street called The Little Basket, very much worth checking out!
