Debut Bar in L’Hospitalet - Worth Leaving Barcelona For

I’m going to start this one with a little piece of advice: leave Barcelona.

Not very far, I promise. Debut is in L’Hospitalet, close to Rambla Just Oliveras, and it’s exactly the kind of place that reminds me why it’s worth looking beyond the usual Barcelona restaurant radius every now and then.

Debut is a small neighborhood bar run by Guillem Salazar and Ignasi Redón, and they’ve created something that feels like much more than somewhere to eat. There are regulars at the bar, people greeting each other as they come in, conversations happening across tables, and owners who seem to know everyone. And if they don’t know you when you arrive, I have a feeling it wouldn’t take very many visits to change that. They make you feel at home from the start.

Creative, but down to earth

That’s probably the best way I can describe the food at Debut. There are interesting combinations and plenty of personality, but nothing feels unnecessarily complicated.

The menu is made for sharing and changes with the seasons, and one important piece of advice: always order something from the specials. The team will tell you what is available right now outside the menu, and you really don’t want to ignore them.

We started with the bombó de tomàquet de penjar, little peeled tomatoes packed with flavor. Such a simple little starter, but so good.

Then came their famous ensaladilla, followed by figs with anchovies, a kind of sweet-salty combination I love. We also had the albergínia blanca, bacallà i ras-el-hanout, bringing together white aubergine, cod and interesting spices.

There were sardines on crisp bread, and then the calamars amb ceba i tomàquet, a wonderfully simple combination of squid, onion and tomato. We clearly weren't done with tomatoes yet, because we also ordered the tomato salad, and when tomatoes are this good at the end of summer, why wouldn't you?

The steak tartare was another favorite. I loved the little touch of spice in it. Enough to give it some character, without overwhelming the meat.

This is really what I liked about the cooking at Debut. It’s creative but still down to earth, with great ingredients doing most of the work. There are dishes you recognize, combinations you might not have thought of, and a menu that makes you want to order more and more.

And then there’s the wine

I was very happy with the wine situation here.

There are lots of interesting bottles to choose from, with Catalan wines alongside plenty from elsewhere. I ended up with a wonderful Palomino from Cádiz. I always get excited when I see Palomino on a wine list, so that was an easy decision.

It’s also the sort of place where you can ask what they have and have a conversation about what you might like, rather than automatically ordering something you already know.

Please save room for dessert

This is important. Do not arrive at dessert saying, “I’m too full.” Plan accordingly (I did), because you’re going to want to try several.

The fig and mascarpone pie was fantastic. So were the peaches in syrup, and then there’s their famous cheesecake, which you probably shouldn’t leave without trying either.

My solution? Order several and share. Please note that a couple of the desserts in the photos are half portions: we wanted to try everything but we were simply too full..!

And just when we thought we were finished, the bill arrived inside an old cassette case. A small detail, but a very fun one, and somehow completely perfect for Debut.

Come for lunch, become a regular?

What stayed with me just as much as the food was the atmosphere. Guillem and the team are very friendly, and there’s clearly a whole community around Debut. Everyone seems to know each other. People stop to chat, regulars come and go, and you get the feeling that this is very much a neighborhood bar.

It makes the whole experience feel personal, and when you add the seasonal cooking, great ingredients and an interesting wine selection, there’s a lot to love here.

Barcelona has more than enough restaurants to keep us occupied for a lifetime, I know. But Debut is absolutely worth going a little further for.

Especially when there’s fig and mascarpone pie waiting at the other end.
