Contracorrent Bar has been one of my go‑to recommendations whenever someone asks for something exciting and original in Barcelona (read my review here). Their new sibling, Contracorrent Bistró, brings that same spirit to Gràcia, and it is just as exiting and impressive. The new place is led by Nicola Drago (kitchen) and Anna Pla (sommelier), the couple behind the concept.

Here too, Anna and Nico have renovated and decorated the interior, just like in their sister restaurant. The space is beautiful, and I highly recommend booking the table in the cozy corner by the kitchen, where you can see all the action and maybe even have a little chat with the chefs.

Here the format is different from the original tapas‑and‑wine approach: they offer a tasting menu that changes with the seasons and the market (it’s all hyper seasonal, which I love!), and makes every visit feel fresh and thrilling. There’s the shorter option if you’re in a hurry, and a longer one if you want to unwind and explore more flavors.

The dishes are incredibly creative, rooted in Mediterranean and Italian influences, and always respectful of product and seasonality. I was particularly surprised with their wonderfully comforting take on a minestrone, and one of the desserts with mushroom (!) which was both surprising and delicious.

The natural wine list, curated by Anna, completes the experience. I’ve always trusted her recommendations: every single wine she’s picked for us has been amazing, and the pairings are spot on.

When you go, be prepared to be surprised: it’s not just dinner, it’s a journey. Contracorrent Bistró feels like a restaurant for food lovers who appreciate subtlety, creativity and good wine, and it definitely belongs among Barcelona’s top spots.
