Off Grid Girona - Slowing Down, the Best Way

Off Grid Girona is one of those rare places that when you arrive, you already feel calmer. Set in nature just outside Girona, this beautifully restored 17th-century masia is all about disconnecting from the noise of everyday life and reconnecting with all the things that really matter: stillness, simplicity, good food, and the surrounding landscape.

The house itself is full of character. The original bones of the farmhouse have been carefully preserved, while contemporary design touches bring light, comfort, and a modern touch to the space.

There are ten ensuite bedrooms in the main house, plus a separate four-bedroom barn, perfect for a group or a family, and no two rooms are the same. Each one has its own personality: warm and cozy, making it feel more like staying in a family home than a traditional hotel. The beds are incredibly comfortable, with perfect, organic natural mattresses and soft bed sheets.

The common areas are just as inviting. There are spaces to read, to chat, or simply to sit down with a cup of (complimentary) coffee and look out over the landscape. One of my favorite details is the honesty bar, where you can help yourself to genuinely excellent natural wine (the options were mouth-watering!), and linger a little longer in the evening, maybe striking up a conversation with fellow guests like we did. The whole place feels communal in the best possible way: relaxed, open, and welcoming.

Food plays a central role at Off Grid Girona. Their resident chef cooks for the guests, following a KM0 philosophy that celebrates local, seasonal produce, much of it sourced nearby, if not directly from their own land. Meals are generous and comforting, served family-style. On our visit, dinner included among other dishes a beautiful pie filled with foraged mushrooms, very comforting and so in tune with the surroundings. There’s something special about eating this way: unhurried, seasonal, and rooted in place.

Step outside and you’ll find gardens full of perennial plants, colorful flowers, and herbs. It’s a peaceful space that changes with the seasons, inviting you to wander around. There’s a large pool for warm days, for yoga, and plenty of corners to enjoy the quiet.

That said, if you’re someone who likes to move, Off Grid Girona is also a fantastic base for exploring. The area is full of woodland paths and scenic trails, perfect for walking, running, or cycling. One of our favorite nearby spots is La Fageda, a stunning beech forest that’s especially magical in autumn, but beautiful any time of year. The wider volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa is equally rewarding, with its rolling hills, lava formations, grazing cows, and endless opportunities for discovery. Hiking here is a treat.

Off Grid Girona Besalú

There are several wonderful towns close by worth visiting. Besalú is a must, and only a few minutes away. It is a charming medieval village with its iconic stone bridge. Olot has a lively food scene and makes for an easy lunch stop, while Figueres is close enough for a cultural day trip. The team at Off Grid is also happy to give suggestions.

At its core, Off Grid Girona is built on values that feel increasingly rare: simplicity, sustainability, creativity, community, and a sense of adventure. It’s less a hotel and more a rural open house: a place where you’re free to choose your own pace. You can spend your days in complete stillness, soaking up the silence and the views, or fill them with movement, exploration, and shared experiences.

Either way, you’ll leave feeling restored, and already thinking about when you might come back. I know I am.
