Superauto - Freestyle and Fun
Barcelona's restaurant scene moves fast, but every now and then a new opening arrives with enough personality to immediately stand out. SuperAuto, the latest project from chef Ronit Stern and Rafael Campos, feels like one of those places.

Located on Carrer del Rosselló, in the former home of popular Auto Rosellón, SuperAuto takes everything people loved about the original and moves it in a new direction.
I recently visited both for breakfast (they call it non-brunch) and lunch, and came away impressed by both experiences. Ronit Stern has a rare ability to pull inspiration from all over the world, add her own unmistakable touch, and turn it into food that is as exciting to look at as it is to eat.

A restaurant without borders
SuperAuto describes its food as "freestyle cuisine", which sounds like marketing jargon until you actually see the menu.
The influences come from everywhere: China, Thailand, Ecuador, the American Midwest and beyond. But this isn't fusion for fusion's sake, and doesn’t fall flat. Instead, the menu feels like a reflection of Stern's culinary personality: playful, creative and impossible to pin down to a single cuisine.
The dishes are designed for sharing, and you’ll notice ingredients are important. It's eclectic, slightly chaotic in the best possible way, and very Barcelona.

Breakfast that goes beyond brunch
One thing many people will be happy to hear is that breakfast remains an important part of Superauto.
While the format has evolved from the previous Auto Rosellón, specialty coffee (served in beautiful ceramic cups), breakfast and daytime dining are still very much part of the experience.
This isn't your standard Eggs Benedic-kind of affair. The menu reflects the same creativity that runs through the rest of the restaurant, offering dishes that feel original without becoming overly complicated. And they have kept the famous bikini sandwich from the old menu, which is much appreciated!

What to order
The menu is constantly evolving, but several dishes already give a good sense of where SuperAuto is heading.
Among the standouts are:
The King Breakfast plate (loved this for sharing), with bread, cheese, whipped butter and jam
The famous Bikini with truffle, mozzarella and jamón
Plantain patacones with chicken and tartar sauce
Chicken and Palamós prawn dumplings
Schnitzel with ham, brie, and pickled mustard

Desserts are equally tempting, the salted caramel sundae with crunchy pecans is a sight for sore eyes (and so delicious!).
At midday (Monday to Friday) they offer a 19,95€ lunch menu, where you choose 1 main, a side, and a drink.

A space built around the bar
The restaurant itself deserves attention too.
Designed by Bárbara Aurell of Espacio en Blanco and Max Altés of The Thing Thinks, the interior avoids many of the clichés currently dominating restaurant design (thank you!).
A fun mustard tone runs throughout the space, complemented by stainless steel, artisan-made tiles and carefully selected lighting. At the center sits a large steel bar that acts as the heart of the restaurant, and it’s also great for solo dining.
During my visits, there has always been a nice vibe, with lots of movement without getting too busy or overwhelming.

Natural wine and creative freedom
Long before natural wine became fashionable in Barcelona, Ronit Stern was already championing it across her restaurants.
That commitment continues at SuperAuto, where the wine list complements the kitchen's free-spirited approach.
More than anything, SuperAuto feels like a restaurant built around creative freedom. There are no strict rules, no obvious labels and no desire to fit neatly into a category. And that's what makes it so interesting.
