Fukamura - An Omakase With Heart
Fukamura might be familiar to many, but perhaps not the major transformation it has recently undergone. It is now an omakase restaurant, where chef Daisuke Fukamura showcases his talents behind the counter in his namesake space.

Born in Tokyo and trained in Asakusa, the heart of traditional Japan, Daisuke Fukamura mastered the art of sushi in historic establishments such as Asakusa Sushi Sei, with more than 140 years of history. In 2007 he made Barcelona his home, working at some of the city’s most respected Japanese restaurants, among them Koy Shunka, Icho, Shibui, and Espai Kru. With Fukamura, his own omakase, he brings together years of experience in an intimate format that reflects his vision of Japanese cuisine: precise, thoughtful, and personal.

No fewer than 14 dishes are prepared, with both local and Japanese ingredients. As is expected with an omakase, each dish is a surprise, largely focused on fish and seafood in the beginning, and turning into warm plates with hour-long preparation towards the end.

The dishes come paired with premium sake; on our visit we tried three different ones and they were truly amazing, including award-winning varieties. They paired perfectly with the dishes.

There are only six seats in this experience, and it makes it feel truly special. Not only is the food remarkable, what’s also worth highlighting is the friendly and approachable demeanour of chef Fukamura. He makes you feel welcome and initiates conversation, which makes for a great opportunity to ask questions. Sometimes an omakase can be quite a sombre affair, but this is not the case at Fukamura.

The quality of the ingredients, the refined skill of chef Fukamura, the beautiful presentation, and the excellent sake pairings come together to create a truly memorable omakase experience, one that feels intimate, personal, and absolutely worth seeking out.
