Margarit - A Touch of Greek

Margarit is quite unlike anything else you can currently find in the Poble Sec neighborhood in Barcelona. Claiming that there’s an abundance of Greek restaurants in the city would be a lie, and Margarit is a welcome addition. And it has a modern touch, with beautiful distressed walls, and an open kitchen. It is quite hypnotic to watch the team work behind the kitchen counter.

Behind this venture are two great chefs, Jordi Fenoll (from Elche) and Stefano Balis (of Greek origin), who play with classic greek dishes and give them their own distinctive flair with Mediterranean touches. The menu is short and sweet, just the way we like it.

On our visit we tried the Taramas; a must-try dish with pickled mussels, the famed Fava dip, an addictive fried pita with cheese, rosemary honey and sesame, a fennel salad with smoked herring, and for dessert the wonderful Portokalopita; a Greek syrup cake served with ice cream. I regret not ordering the Palestinian lamb which is one of their star dishes, prepared with the recipe of the chefs’ Palestinian friend.

The wines are exciting, too. There are plenty of Greek natural wine options in the wine list, so you are guaranteed to find something thrilling.

Margarit has been quite the success from the moment it opened its doors, so make sure to book your table in advance!
