Suru Restaurant - A Sneaky Secret

Suru Restaurant is very discreet and you might not notice it when walking around the neighborhood, unless you know exactly what you’re looking for. With just the street number guiding you, you’ll find a small door that will take you where you’ll want to be. And trust me, you’ll want to be here.

Right across the street from Mercat del Ninot, Suru is one of the magnificent restaurants in Barcelona in the genre of young dynamic chefs showcasing their talent in an approachable manner. I find these kind of spots very attractive: a place you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for a unique culinary experience you won’t forget.

Carles Morote (chef), Sergi Puig (wines), and Gemma López is the team that runs a tight ship in the marvel of a place. Before teaming up at Suru, they gained plenty of experience in high-end restaurants, and it shows in everything they do. Right from the start they have showcased their own, interesting identity and during the couple of years they have been open they keep refining it, but staying true to who they are and what they believe in. And it’s truly beautiful.

The space itself is already a treat, with concrete walls dotted with shelves with wine bottles and a few books. The seats by the kitchen are coveted: it’s the perfect place to see all the action and preparation.

The team works smoothly and effortlessly, and when sitting by the bar you see all the action. It’s a real treat. It is also the kind of place where chefs go to eat: you can spot them sitting by themselves, enjoying every dish that lands in front of them. You can choose between picking dishes that sound the most interesting from the menu, or you can go for an omakase-style meal where the team picks them for you. I highly recommend you go for the omakase: if there’s something you don’t eat or are allergic to they’ll adapt. You get a well-rounded experience, and don’t miss out on anything.

The menu is ever-changing, depending on the day, the week, the season, and what the chefs like to play with. But you can expect magic. Beautiful dishes with surprising textures, flavor combinations, and ingredients. They don’t shy away from offal, but make it very approachable and even exciting. The kitchen dives into pickling, vinaigrettes, sauces; details that all come together beautifully. Some dishes are classics that regulars love and ask for that might change a little each season, and there are a few signature dishes that you cannot miss, such as the chicken skin and shrimp skewer (see above) that is simply fantastic.

The wine list is just as exciting, and make sure to ask Sergi, the sommelier, for recommendations. You won’t go wrong here. I’ve loved every wine I’ve had here, and the pairings have been so spot on. I am still in awe with a 30-year sherry I had on my first visit, paired with the dessert: it was pure heaven.

Suru Restaurant has a very distinct personality, and it is impossible not to fall in love with it. There’s so much passion here, and it’s transmitted into each plate. Places that go straight to your Best Of-list, after just one visit. It sure is one of my absolute favorites.
