The Coolest Restaurants in Barcelona

Picking favorites is not an easy feat, but we decided to make a list of the coolest restaurants in Barcelona for you to enjoy. What is a cool restaurant you ask? We think it’s all about the vibes and the atmosphere, and a touch of authenticity, of course.

Berbena Barcelona coolest restaurants

Berbena

Berbena deserves a place in any best restaurants list, including the coolest ones. It is tucked away in the heart of Gràcia, and offers up a warm and cozy vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. While you wait for their doors to swing open, you can groove to the cool tunes seeping out, and have a sneak peek into the culinary magic about to unfold.

Their cuisine is like a journey through the Mediterranean, highlighting the best of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. What makes Berbena a gem is their ever-changing menu, keeping you on your toes with exciting surprises.

And let's not forget the wine! Berbena's got an (large) eclectic selection, featuring local and international bottles that pair perfectly with your meal. Just a heads-up, though: snagging a reservation well in advance is a must because this place is red-hot and closed on weekends. In case you’re left empty-handed and your dates are fully booked, check out its sister spot Pompa which is close by, where the food is wonderful and the wine’s aplenty.

Why is it cool? Its laid-back, cozy vibe and the way they keep things fresh and delicious without any fuss.

Fishology Barcelona coolest restaurants

Fishology

Fishology stands out as a one-of-a-kind restaurant, paying homage to age-old techniques in fish preparation. They embrace a nose-to-tail philosophy, ensuring that every part of the fish gets its due respect. Make sure to try their home-made vermouths: they add a delightful twist to your dining journey, crafting an unforgettable culinary experience steeped in tradition.

Beyond their exceptional meals, Fishology also hosts a variety of intriguing workshops to engage and enlighten their guests. Check their website for more info.

Why is it cool? It's the sheer uniqueness of their concept, the surprises that await on their menu (the charcuterie board, all made with fish, is mind-blowing), and the genuinely talented and welcoming team that make every visit a memorable experience. Now they have also gained a Michelin star.

Hermos Bar de Peix Barcelona Coolest Restaurants Barcelona

Hermós, Bar de Peix

The Llibertat market in Gràcia is not as crazy busy and tourist-packed as the Boquería market, and it holds a wonderful surprise: Hermòs, Bar de Peix. This seafood-focused bar makes the most scrumptious dishes with seasonal ingredients (the menu changes frequently), and it consists of simply a few stools by a bar. The wines are also perfectly chosen for the occasion, and the service is very friendly.

Why is it cool? Not a lot of people know about it, and eating in the middle of a food market is just perfect.

Hermós, Bar de Peix, Plaça de la Llibertat, 08012 Barcelona (Gràcia).

Sensato Barcelona coolest restaurants Barcelona

Sensato Restaurant

Sensato Restaurant stands as a hidden gem – an intimate, small-scale eatery with just six coveted seats, promising an extraordinary culinary adventure. Under the guidance of Chef Sato, the dishes presented here in the form of an omakase, are nothing short of masterpieces, embarking guests on a gastronomic journey like no other.

To secure a place at this cool spot, reservations are a must, but they come with a challenge. Booking opens up on the first Monday of every month for the following month, making it a bit of a test of patience and persistence to secure one of those sought-after seats.

Why is it cool? You feel so special when you sit here and get to enjoy this unique omakase-style meal.

PS: If you can’t get a seat here, try Suto: their omakase is quite unique and perfect for an unforgettable meal (and they have a Michelin star).

Lluritu Barcelona coolest restaurants

Lluritu

Lluritu, hands-down one of the top seafood restaurants in Barcelona, strikes a perfect balance between laid-back charm (it’s very casual) and effortless style. Here, the focus is on uncomplicated yet incredibly flavorful fish and seafood tapas, with an atmosphere where both seafood aficionados and casual diners can revel in a satisfying and delightful dining experience.

The restaurant exudes the timeless ambiance of a classic "bar de toda la vida" but with a distinct touch of contemporary coolness. Among the standout dishes, the dried octopus takes the spotlight and is an absolute must-try.

Why is it cool? Its simplicity combined with the tasty seafood.

Lluritu, Carrer del Torrent de les Flors, 71, Carrer de la Virtut, 11, Barcelona (Gràcia) and Pg. de St. Joan, 72, L'Eixample, 08009 Barcelona.

Bardeni El Meatbar - Caldeni Barcelona

Bardeni, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Bardeni El Meatbar

A heads-up: Bardeni is not a steakhouse. But it’s an incredible spot for those who enjoy meat. Chef Dani Lechuga is masterful when it comes to creating meat-based dishes, and presents them in all their forms. You are guaranteed to be surprised. The Denito is a must-order, but you won’t go wrong with anything you pick from the menu.

The restaurant has a touch of the personality of the owner throughout its interior, and it adds to the experience. Make sure to book in advance, the reservations fill up fast and the restaurant doors are closed unless you have a booking.

Why is it cool? For its personality, and how unique and different it is, including its delicious dishes.

Bardeni, Carrer de València, 454, L'Eixample, 08013 Barcelona.

Malparit Restaurant Barcelona

Malparit

From the group behind fan-favorite Babula comes Malparit, a rebellious little gem with plenty of personality. The interior is warm and versatile: you’ll find that you can come here for any occasion, ranging from a caña and a snack to a full-fledged business dinner.

The menu is rooted in traditional Catalan cooking but adds just the right amount of attitude: oysters come with romesco or “a la vizcaína,” the tortilla is gorgeously runny and shareable, and the steak tartare (a nod to Babula) is a favorite for a reason. There’s a clear love for rebellious flavors and thoughtful details, from torreznos with dramatic flair to scallops with spinach and payoyo cheese.

And yes, there’s flan, and it’s fantastic. Read my review here.

Why is it cool? They use really, really good ingredients for everything, and because it’s perfect for any occasion.

Malparit, Carrer de Còrsega, 253, 08036 Barcelona (Eixample Esquerra).

Tercero Primera Barcelona

Tercero Primera A

You won’t find it on a map. You find it through word of mouth, and by dropping a message to chef and owner Arianna to book. You ring a bell without a name or sign on a nondescript Eixample building, and step through an equally anonymous door. But what’s inside is something truly special.

Tercero Primera A is, quite literally, an apartment on the third floor. But it’s been transformed by the warmth and care of chef Arianna, who fills the space with soul and beautiful food. It’s like a dream: light floods through the windows, vintage furniture is mismatched in the most charming way, and thoughtful little details are scattered throughout. The kitchen is open, and it feels like you’ve stepped into a friend’s home. Arianna makes sure you feel that way too. The food is very seasonal, homely, and comforting.

Why is it cool? Nobody knows about it, unless you’ve been told by a friend. Or read it here. :)

Book Tercero Primera A by sending Arianna a DM through Instagram: @tercero_primera_a.

Bandini's Barcelona coolest restaurants

Bandini’s

Bandini's is the epitome of a cool bar and restaurant – a laid-back and inviting spot where you can leisurely enjoy a glass of a fun natural wine before indulging in delectable Italian-inspired dishes with a creative twist, perfect for sharing among friends.

What sets Bandini's apart is their ever-evolving menu, ensuring a continuous stream of new and exciting deliciousness. Their menu never ceases to surprise, and neither does their wine selection, and together with the friendly team it all comes together to make a lovely experience.

Why is it cool? It’s a hangout you won’t want to leave, and the dishes are always exciting.

Fonda Pepa Barcelona coolest restaurants

Fonda Pepa

Fonda Pepa is quite the hidden gem in the Gràcia neighborhood. This delightful but casual gastro bar is the brainchild of two culinary maestros, Pedro and Francisco. Inside, you'll discover a rather vintage touch to the decoration (not much has changed in terms of the interior for decades), creating an atmosphere that's both simple, in a good way, and charming.

Their menu is a delightful mix of Catalan classics that pay homage to local traditions. However, Fonda Pepa also weaves in some unexpected Mexican-inspired surprises. If you're a fan of seafood, you're in for a treat with their selection of fresh catches. To complement your meal, their wine list offers a perfect array of choices.

For warm summer nights, don't miss the leafy patio at the back; it’s an oasis perfect for al fresco dining. Whether you're seeking a taste of Catalonia or an unexpected twist, Fonda Pepa has it all. They also serve a lunch menu on weekdays, and run a wonderful tapas spot called Oído, which I highly recommend visiting too.

Why is it cool? The unexpected mix in the dishes, and for the true gem it really is, although from the outside it might not seem like it.

Fonda Pepa, Carrer de Tordera, 58, 08012 Barcelona (Gracia).

Table by Ona, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Table by Ona

For something truly one-of-a-kind, Table by Ona is hard to beat. Hidden in an undisclosed location in Poblenou, this intimate six-seat dining experience by chef Jack Tonkin and Aniela Parys, offers a 17-course tasting menu that changes nightly (offered Fridays and Saturdays), depending on what’s fresh and in season. The attention to detail is incredible, from wild herbs forages at early morning hours to beautifully curated non-alcoholic ferments, to unusual wines. It’s immersive, personal, and simply unforgettable. Read my review of Table by Ona here.

Why is it cool? Because it’s a little secret, it feels so intimate, and the chef is fantastic at what he does.

Table by Ona, Poblenou (exact location shared upon booking).

Masa Vins Barcelona coolest restaurants and bars

Masa Vins

This bright young newcomer defines itself as “Your living room but with a fridge full of natural wines”, and we love that definition. From the moment their doors open, the small place floods with thirsty guests, and when you see their tasty menu with cool dishes to share, you can’t resist. The music comes from a vinyl record player, and it all becomes a vibe.

Why is it cool? Their exciting wines, the fun vibes, and the fun food.

Masa Vins, C. de Pallars, 154, 08005 Barcelona (Poblenou).

La Cova Fumada coolest restaurants and bars

La Cova Fumada

La Cova Fumada is quite a timeless institution, famous for serving some of the best tapas in Barcelona since the 1940s. This beloved, family-owned restaurant specializes in delectable, fresh seafood dishes, and its daily-changing menu, famously displayed on a blackboard, adds to the authenticity of the dining experience.

What sets La Cova Fumada apart is its ability to preserve a warm and welcoming atmosphere that truly makes you feel like part of the family. Sometimes it’s also very comforting when some things never change, right?

Please note that they close in the early afternoon, so the usual local lunch hours don’t apply at this place. Go early.

Why is it cool? You feel like this is a tapas place you’ve always been hanging out in.

La Cova Fumada, C/ Baluard 56, Barcelona (Barceloneta).

Alapar Barcelona coolest restaurants

Alapar

Alapar, nestled in the vibrant Poble Sec district of Barcelona, is a top dining destination, offering a truly special and charming experience. With a concise yet fascinating menu crafted from local seasonal produce, this restaurant introduces a fascinating blend of Mediterranean and Japanese influences that will blow your mind.

At the helm of Alapar are Jaume Marambio and Vicky Maccarone, with plenty of experience in high-end establishments. Their dishes are not only delectable but also exquisite in presentation. Standout selections include a range of mouthwatering nigiris and montaditos to indulgent oysters, succulent beef tataki, innovative fricandó with fish and miso, and delectable stuffed squid.

The dessert menu is equally perfect, featuring a kakigori machine that conjures up unique sweet treats, and an unforgettable grilled mochi that's truly one-of-a-kind.

Alapar's fascinating fusion of flavors and concepts makes it a top recommended spot for those seeking a great meal and a unique dining experience, be it for a special treat or a lovely dinner with friends.

Why is it cool? This combo of local flavors and a Japanese twist is not easy to excel in, but here they have nailed it.

Alapar, C/ de Lleida, 5, 08004 Barcelona (Poble Sec).

Mikan Barcelona Coolest restaurants

Mikan, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Mikan

What a delightful surprise! Mikan has transformed from a humble lunch-box service into a bustling brick-and-mortar establishment, firmly rooted in its identity: North-East Asian cuisine complemented by a thoughtfully curated selection of low-intervention wines. For us, it stands among the top restaurants in Barcelona thanks to its great atmosphere and wonderful service.

At lunchtime, they present a wholesome, homemade meal deal featuring a flavorful main course surrounded by an array of delectable small dishes. When evening descends, Mikan adopts a tapas-style approach, encouraging shared dining experiences paired with intriguing natural wines. It's the kind of place that invites you to step inside, settle in, and linger.

Why is it cool? It's the comforting, mouthwatering food, the welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to make yourself at home, and simply put, the great vibes.

Mikan, C/ d'Aribau, 158, Barcelona (Eixample Esquerra).

Suru Bar Barcelona

Suru Restaurant, Barcelona.

Suru Restaurant

This gem of a place, Suru Restaurant, is not easy to find: you won’t stumble upon it accidentally! Located just across the street for lovely Mercat del Ninot, there’s an anonymous door that opens up into a cool spot with concrete walls, an open kitchen, and an overall great atmosphere.

The young and dynamic team that runs the place showcases cool dishes with seasonal and local ingredients, and don’t shy away from unusual ones, including offal (but trust me, they do a great job on it!). I highly recommend you ask for wine pairings: they’ll give you excellent suggestions for fun wines to enjoy your meal with. Make sure to snatch a seat in front of the open kitchen!

Why is it cool? It’s the approachable vibe that does it for me: the food is elaborate but you won’t feel any Michelin-star stiffness here (but the quality is up there). Read my review of Suru Restaurant here.

Suru Restaurant, Carrer de Casanova, 134, 08036 Barcelona (Eixample Esquerra).

Pompa Barcelona

Pompa, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Pompa

Above mentioned Berbena has now a sister restaurant, it’s a slightly different, bolder concept, but equally intriguing and satisfying. It’s located on the same street, in a corner, and you’re greeted with music from a vinyl record player when you arrive. If you can, pick a seat at the bar so that you can watch the team prepare the dishes, it’s an experience in itself. The dishes are served in beautiful, vintage dishes and as you’d expect, there is a large range of great wines to choose from (600 to be more precise). Make sure to book well in advance.

Why is it cool? Nothing beats the seats at the bar where you watch the chefs at work, and any place where the salad of the day will blow your mind is worth it.

Pompa, Carrer de Sèneca, 25, 08006 Barcelona (Gràcia).

El Rectangle, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

El Rectangle

It’s all about the vibe at El Rectangle: the chefs’ buddies come by and hang at the bar, you might spot a local actor stopping by for a bite, but it’s all very low key. The food here is fantastic: it’s a good idea to order as many dishes from the menu as possible to share, so that you can try a little bit of everything. The wines are also great here, and don’t miss the katsu sando. Read my review of El Rectangle here.

Why is it cool? It’s casual but vibey, the chefs are excited about what they do, and you want to stay here for a while.

El Rectangle, Carrer de Sepúlveda, 23, 08015 Barcelona (Sant Antoni).

Franca Barcelona

Franca, Barcelona. Photo © Barcelona Food Experience.

Franca

Franca is the kind of place that locals love, and tourists rarely find. It has received plenty of raving reviews, and it’s easy to understand why. The concept, the execution, and the atmosphere are all spot on. Three young chefs with experience from some of Barcelona’s top fine dining restaurants have come together to create something truly exciting: a place that celebrates Catalan tradition while giving it a fresh, modern twist. Read my review here.

Why is it cool? The interior is unique, inviting, and cozy, and the food exciting. By looking at the menu, you don’t know what will land on your table (but it’s always delicious).

Franca, Carrer de Roger de Llúria 46, Barcelona (Eixample Dreta).
