Five Favorites in Barcelona - Matcha

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m the biggest fan of matcha. Nowadays you can have matcha in most spots that also serve specialty coffee, but the quality varies from great to, well, not so great.

When you travel you notice that matcha is not something you’ll necessarily find everywhere you go. But in Barcelona we’re pretty spoilt with good matcha, and we even have cafes that specialize in it. I’ve picked my five favorites for good matcha, and a couple of bonus tracks.

Ikenocha

Ikenocha is quite exceptional when it comes to matcha. This friendly Japanese couple serve matcha drinks in various forms, hojicha, onigiris, lunchboxes and also a selection of antique Japanese ceramics. The Basque matcha cheese cake is highly recommended.

Carrer de París, 149, 08036 Barcelona (Eixample Esquerra).

Niwa Cafeteria Barcelona

Niwa Cafeteria

Niwa is a bit hidden away in Putxet, but worth the trek. Not only for their matcha options, but also for other fascinating drinks they have on their menu. I’m a big fan of the matcha cortado - perfect for if you want to try their matcha but also something else unique you might not have tried before. They also offer some savory (and sweet) snacks if you’re hungry. Read my review of Niwa here.

Carrer de Vallirana, 78, 08006 Barcelona (Putxet).

Matcha Crew Barcelona

Matcha Crew

Matcha Crew goes all in on matcha. There are numerous matcha options in all kinds of flavors, and you can also choose type of matcha (some are more intense in flavor than others). I’m determined to work through the menu and try everything. Read my review here.

Carrer de València, 418, 08025 Barcelona (Sagrada Familia).

Bonsai Coffee & Matcha

Bonsai might be tiny, but mighty in terms of matcha. They have good matcha options, and the quality is great. They also do wholesale, and you can buy matcha to take home with you (or online, they even have a subscription service). Some of their matcha is award winning!

Maison Coffee

I love every single drink I’ve had a Maison Coffee so far, and their matcha is great, too. Do not miss their cakes, or anything pistachio. If you’re lucky, you’ll get some really cute and creative latte art. Read my review here.

Honorable Mentions

Nori Matcha - I haven’t been here yet but it’s on my immediate To Go-list. New Nori Matcha has plenty of fun matcha options on the menu: iced blueberry matcha, green velvet matcha, ginger matcha, French toast topped with matcha ice cream, hojicha, matcha cheesecake… There are three different quality grades of matcha to pick from, AND the place itself looks cool. They also do matcha wholesale. C/ Sardenya 198, Barcelona (Arc de Triomf).

Sr Brown - This cafe that’s on everyone’s lips right now makes a unique matcha with coconut that’s very much worth trying. Read my review of Sr. Brown here. Carrer d'Entença, 3, Barcelona (Sant Antoni).

Hidden Coffee Roasters - They’ve been traveling to Japan for years now, sourcing their own matcha, and the quality is excellent. We’ve also bought their matcha online, and the delivery is impeccable and fast. You’ll find them in Les Corts, Born, Poblenou, and Girona.
